How can you use Twitter for marketing?

Twitter, what is that? Do you really have to ask, where have you been? Twitter is probably one of the quickest growing sites on the internet these days. It is breaking new ground, and increasing users at a very fast clip. If you have to ask what this thing called Twitter is, you, more than anyone, have to read this and become a part of it!

Twitter is pretty much a mini blogging platform. You only have 140 digits for each post. This may seem too small at first, but you can truely pack a lot of stuff into 140 characters. Even more to your advantage, though, is people are more likely to read all 140 characters than they are to read a full email. As you get more used to working with the 140 character limit, it will become amazing what you can fit into that small space.

Twitter is much more, though, than just the platform to post daily ideas. It is turning into a great marketing boom for people who know how to tap into the power of the site. There are quite a few Twitter tools populating the cyberspace, allowing you to put together a following fast.

The whole thing to Twitter is the ability to grow a following of very targeted people. It is a virtual email list, but an email list that you can send messages to 5, 10 or 20 times a day. Imagine that, how many advertising sources are out there that will allow you to get your message in front of a very targeted audience 10, 20 or more times a day? Well, there is a few, but how many won't cost you a dime?

The big upside to Twitter is that as you increase this following of laser targeted followers, you begin building your own brand. You can build a reputation with these individuals, and they will always be there to receive your message. Pretty powerful stuff.

If you are just getting started on Twitter, one thing you will want to do is build your followers. For those new to Twitter, this can be a lot of trial and error and frustrating. There are many of pretty decent articles on how to get more followers on Twitter, but what I would suggest is some of the software floating around to help you manage the process.

There are many sites out there talking about “follower trains”, like a link exchange but for followers. You will get followers quickly, but they are not quality followers. They are not targeted, and most are people just looking to grow their own followers. Your advertising is only as good as your list, grow it properly is my suggestion. The availability of Twitter and other social networking websites, as well as the popularity of text messaging, have made short-form communication an everyday reality. But expressing yourself declaratively in short messages with 140-character max involves effective writing skill.
